In July 1976, at a Sex Pistols gig at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall, Bernard encountered three childhood school friends named Ian Curtis, Peter Hook and Terry Mason. They were all excited about the new wave of punk and decided to form a band – which became Joy Division. After the untimely suicide of Curtis in 1980 the remaining members created New Order and began to move away from bleak punk and incorporate dance rhythms and electronic instrumentation into their work. In 1983 “Blue Monday” became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. They went on to win Grammys, Brits, and Ivor Novello awards. This is a rare live image of Sumner from the 80’s when the band refused to do interviews to avoid the endless questions about Ian Curtis.
