Known for his powerful blues tinged voice, Coverdale had been singing with local bands when in 1973 he saw an article in Melody Maker which said that Deep Purple were auditioning singers to replace Ian Gillan. He sent a tape and was called in for audition and was offered the job. He made three albums with them before Jon Lord and Ian Paice decided to disband Deep Purple. Coverdale released a solo album ‘White Snake’ in the aftermath of the collapse of Deep Purple, and then a second ‘Northwinds’ shortly after. He formed his own band Whitesnake with Bernie Marsden and Mick Moody in 1978. He got Jon Lord and Ian Paice to join him and record the breakthrough single ‘Fool For Your Loving’. Whitesnake joined the elite of Rock with further hits ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’. They are still performing now though the band line up is ever changing it remains a ‘who’s who’ of rock legends.
