The other half of the Brit Pop explosion, Oasis were formed in Manchester in 1991. They were originally called Rain (which is fitting for Manchester) and were led by Liam Gallagher. His brother Noel joined later. Remarkably even though the band only ever made eight albums they have sold over 75 million of them, putting them among the best selling bands of all time. The relationship between the Gallagher brothers was a key feature of the band and it was always tempestuous. Noel had to leave their 2000 European tour after he and Liam got in a fist-fight in Barcelona. After the band’s first gig Liam asked Noel to become their manager but Noel refused saying: “Your tunes are shit. I’ll show you some tunes” before going and fetching his guitar. Noel told Behind the Music, “The stuff that Liam was writing was just awful. Fucking shocking. I mean, seriously. If you think, right, that some of my stuff is fucking bad, you really won’t want to hear the stuff they were coming up with before I joined the band.”
