Peter in the mirror, checking his iconic ‘monkey mask’ make-up that characterised his ‘Play Live’ solo tour and album, his first live album since leaving supergroup Genesis. Gabriel had been dumped by Atlantic records who deemed his output ‘too esoteric’. He signed up with Geffen records and Play Live went on to produce three hit singles; ‘Biko’, ‘Shock the Monkey’, and ‘Solsbury Hill’. To many, Genesis are two distinct bands, defined by the differences between successive front men: Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. “I think people loved the mystery of those days with Peter,” admits Collins now. “I always think of him as the mysterious traveller in the band, and it all became a lot more normal when I became singer. Peter is the essence of the late hippy bloom into prog rock. He was unlike most other prog rock contemporaries though as he was actually progressive.
