The all girl group were originally called The Colors, and then The Bangs. They were about to release their first single when another band called The Bangs caused a legal issue and forced the band to change their name at the last minute. So they dropped ‘The’ and added the letters ‘les’ to become Bangles. They got together in Los Angeles in December 1981 and were part of the ‘Paisley Underground’ scene in LA. They enjoyed moderate success early on but their big break came when Prince heard their first single and liked their sound. He offered them one of his songs. That song was ‘Manic Monday’. It became Bangles first big hit and catapulted them onto the worldwide stage.
