Susanna Hoffs, Debbi and Vicki Peterson, and Micki Steele were drawn together after discovering a mutual love of The Beatles. They met through classified adverts seeking bandmates in weekly paper ‘The Recycler’. Micki has been in ‘The Runaways’ with Joan Jett and Lita Ford before joining. Starting out as a rock band and writing their own songs their first four hits were pop songs written by other people. After ‘Manic Monday’ another hit fell into their laps. Liam Sternberg had written ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’ for Toni Basil, who turned it down. Then it was recorded by Lene Lovich but never released as it was not considered a hit. The Bangles recorded it alongside ‘Manic Monday’ and it became a number 1 – and made the album ‘Different Light’ their most successful ever. In July 2004, Paul McCartney presented the Bangles with “honorary rock’n’roll diplomas” from his Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.
