Captured here fronting her band Hole, Courtney remains one of the most controversial women in music. Born into a well connected Bohemian family in San Francisco, Love’s early years were a mixture of wild artistic hippiedom, expulsions from school, then detention in juvenile custody. Courtney took the name Love to conceal her identity when she started working at an illegal strip club. The name stuck. She loved to study and travel. A chance meeting in Dublin with Julian Cope of The Teardrop Explodes led to an invitation to stay at his house where she also met Pete DeFreitas of Echo and the Bunnymen. She dabbled in music and in acting before her connections brought success on the screen. She featured in the video for Ramones ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ before landing roles in ‘Sid and Nancy’ and ‘Straight to Hell’. Despite a varied and multi-faceted career, it is her marriage to Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain that still splits opinion.
