Freddie Mercury – Queen.
The face is obscured but the style and pose make him unmistakable – Freddie Mercury came alive on stage and is an undoubted icon in the history of rock. Born Farrokh Bulsara in the Sultanate of Zanzibar (now Tanzania). He spent most of his childhood in India, learning piano from an early age. In 1964 the family, fled civil war in Zanzibar, and moved to England. In 1970 he formed Queen with Brian May and Roger Taylor. He was the most charismatic frontman since Jim Morrison, combining an extreme vocal range with a natural love of showmanship. He was spectacular. He could also write – penning ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Somebody to Love’, ‘We are the Champions’. ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, and ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. Freddie always kept his personal feelings private and his band mates respected that. He didn’t tell them he had AIDS until 1989. Together, they agreed to record as much as possible for as long as possible. Freddie passed on November 24 1991 and will always be missed.
