Robert William Gary Moore was born in Belfast in 1952. His father was a promoter and gave Gary his first chance at being on stage aged 6, he also gave him his first guitar aged 8. Gary was left handed, but much like Mark Knopfler, had to learn guitar playing right handed. This placed his dominant hand on the fretboard and would help to define the high sustain blues style he developed. Aged just 16 he left home and went to Dublin where he joined Phil Lynott’s band Skid Row. It was an association that would lead him to Thin Lizzy and remain a constant throughout both their careers. In the mid 1970’s a bar fight ended with him being hit in the face with a broken bottle. He was self conscious about the scarring for the rest of his life. He forged a successful solo career with his famous guitar, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul was called ‘Greeny’ – because he had bought it from Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac. It was bought by Kirk Hammett of Metallica for $2 million in 2014.
