Mainstay of the world biggest ever rock and roll band the Rolling Stones it may be hard to believe that Keith Richards started out in music as a choirboy singing as a soprano. He got his love of music from his grandfather Gus Dupree, who toured Britain with his own jazz big band, Gus Dupree and His Boys. It was Gus who gave Keith his first guitar – and encouraged him to listen to Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington while practising. Keith has had a long and notorious relationship with drugs and alcohol. When Police raided his Sussex country mansion in 1967 – in what became infamous as the Redlands drugs bust – Keith was so high on LSD that he mistook the uniformed policemen for friendly dwarves, opened the doors, and welcomed them in with open arms. Richards says that on average, he has slept only two nights a week for many years. “This means that I have been conscious for at least three lifetimes”.
