Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix but had never played a guitar in his life. Then when Hawkwind’s bassist failed to show up at a gig Lemmy told them he could do it. Either everyone was stoned or deaf as Lemmy remained in the band for the next four years. The first band he formed was called Bastard – but after his manager told him they would never get a slot on Top of the Pops he changed the name to Motorhead. 40 years later they remain one of the foundations of the heavy metal genre. Asked wanted from his band Lemmy said – “music so loud that if we move in next door to you, your lawn will die.”
