He made multiple suicide attempts in his teens and young adult years but began to find peace when he enrolled to study Performing Arts at Leeds Polytechnic, which is where he met Dave Ball and they formed Soft Cell. Their cover of Northern Soul standard ‘Tainted Love’ was an instant sensation – entering the Guinness Book of Records for the longest time a single stayed in the Billboard Hot 100. Almond was christened Mark, but changed his name to match that of his early hero, Marc Bolan.
