An interesting early portrait of Peter Buck and Michael Stipe.
American alternative rock icons R.E.M. were formed in 1980 in Athens Georgia, by Peter Buck, Bill Berry, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe ,while they were students at the University of Georgia. In 1983 they broke out with their hit debut album ‘Murmur’ which was named Rolling Stone magazine’s Album of the Year. Stipe’s distinctive vocal style combined with Buck’s arpeggiated guitar style is cited as the cause of the rebirth of the whole Alternative Rock movement which began with The Velvet Underground in the 1960’s. Producing 15 studio albums and 4 live albums which have sold over 85 million records, they have been honoured consistently over their careers with Grammy awards, MTV awards, Brit awards.
