Thurston Moore and Kim Garden founded Sonic Youth together with Lee Ranaldo in 1981. The band emerged out of the experimental ‘no-wave’ art and music scene in New York. Known for their unorthodox guitars tunings and experimentation the band was a pivotal influence on both the alternative and indie rock movements and spawned the style known as ‘noise rock’. They were underground icons for most of the 1980’s but their true breakthrough came in 1988 with the double album ‘Daydream Nation’. Instead of editing down their song ideas, the group expanded them into free-flowing suites that better reflected their live performances. Subsequent albums ‘Dirty’ and ‘ Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star’ and ‘The Eternal’ were all hits. True fame was finally confirmed when they appeared in ‘The Simpsons’ as Sonic Youth in the Hullabalooza episode, where they stole food from Peter Frampton’s cooler.
