Formed from the Ashes of Sisters of Mercy in 1986, the Mission helped define the genre that became known as Gothic Rock. They supported The Cult on a tour of Europe which generated enough word of mouth to see them booked to appear at the Reading Festival. Frontman Wayne Hussey (seen here in his trademark fedora and shades) was raised a Mormon in his home-town of Bristol, England. His devout parents intended him to become a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Hussey rebelled and ran away to Liverpool – where he hung around the legendary Eric’s Club with the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, Dead or Alive (whom he joined), The Teardrop Explodes, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The Mission have a catalogue of 11 albums and remain active today.
