ZZ Top were formed in Houston Texas by Billy Gibbons in 1969. The name came from the posters he had on his apartment walls. He noticed that initials were popular with musicians like B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill. The band struggled to get record label attention initially, so made early personnel changes that saw Frank Beard of American Blues become drummer and he brought bassist Dusty Hill along with him. The new band was signed by London Records, part of Decca UK. They hit their signature sound on their third album ‘Tres Hombres’ which reached #8 in the album charts. ZZ Top have released 15 studio albums and sold over 50 million records worldwide. They are the longest running American rock band with no member changes. Frank Beard is the one without a beard.
